World Water Day 2021: what, why & how to get involved

Monday 22 March is World Water Day, an annual United Nations Observance, focussing on the importance of freshwater.

The aim?

To celebrate water and raise awareness of the 2.2 billion people living without access to safe water.

It’s a cause we feel strongly about at Everflow, we’ve been commissioning wells in water scarce countries since Everflow launched in 2015 and we encourage our employees to give back, getting involved with campaigns such as CAFOD’s Walk for Water.

We’re always looking for ways we can help out more, too, including closer to home where water is also under threat.

Water is a highly valuable, finite resource around the world, even in the UK where we are seeing more frequent droughts.

We are now offering water efficiency services and encouraging our customers everywhere we can – through email communications, social media and over the phone, to do their bit to use water wisely.

What value does water bring?

We asked employees across the Everflow Group what water meant to them, and here’s what they said:

“To me water is essential to keep me healthy, did you know that water works to deliver oxygen to every part of your body?”

“Water is my zen – when I’m feeling anxious the sound of rain, waterfalls and especially the sea really help me feel at peace”

“To me, water means relaxation. There’s nothing better than listening to a running stream or the sea”

“Water is so fundamental to human life, but we often take it for granted, especially in places with current relative water security like the UK”

“To me, water means wellbeing – it’s vital for hygiene and health”

“Nature and beauty – I love being by the sea, a river, stream – any body of water really! I find them very calming and uplifting”

Weird and wonderful water facts:

  • Only 3% of the Earth's water is fresh water

  • Over 68% of fresh water on Earth is trapped in glaciers

  • Water regulates the Earth's temperature

  • The human brain is 75% water

  • A person can only live about a week without water
